INDIANAPOLIS — Maeve Nelson smacked a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to lead River Forest past Nebraska 5-4 at the Central Region Little League International Tournament Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Nelson’s blast broke a 3-3 tie as the Illinois state champion won its second straight game, after beating Missouri 6-1 on Monday. River Forest dropped a heart-breaker in its opener, 13-12 in extra innings, to Indianapolis.

Emily Cekander picked up the victory on the mound in relief of Nelson with four innings of work. She allowed a run in the bottom of the fifth that cut the River Forest lead to 5-4, but shut them down in the sixth for the win.

River Forest collect eight hits, two each by Nelson (.500 tournament avg.) and Maddie Guerrier (double, .400 avg.). Sydney Babbington continued to ignite the offense as she singled ahead of Nelson’s homer and scored three runs. She is hitting .778 in the three games of the tournament.

River Forest is back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Kentucky at Stokley Field.
