The Fenwick boys swimming team ended its regular season with what appeared to be a disappointing finish at New Trier last week, but that isn’t necessarily the case, said Friars head coach Luke McGuire.
The Friars finished with only 56 points at the meet, compared to 129 for victorious hosts, but McGuire said he’s satisfied with the progress of his squad as it prepares for the Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference championships at home.
“Although it might appear from the final score that we were beaten badly, that really wasn’t the case,” McGuire said. “When you go up against a school with four times as many boys — with a huge feeder program — you pretty much figure they are going to produce more good swimmers. We’re in line with where I would like the team to be pretty much right now, as we head into the MCAC championships and then sectionals.”
Junior Justin White won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 47.92 seconds, while senior Viken Huening took second in the 100 free in 49.33. Freshman diver Max Showalter continued to impress, finishing second.
Fenwick’s relay teams continued to provide tough competition. The 200 medley relay (seniors Bryce Peters and Rich Mueller, junior Tommy McGuire and Huening) placed second in 1:41.11. The 200 freestyle relay (White, Huening, McGuire and senior Dan Kelly) also was a runner-up, finishing in 1:29.45. The 400 free relay (White, Huening, Kelly and junior Matt Bresnahan) placed third in 3:18.19.
“Overall, I was very happy with the times in this meet,” McGuire said. “We continue to swim consistently fast, and I expect our swimmers to drop time for the MCAC’s, and again for sectionals.”
The MCAC meet kicks off with diving, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. Swimmers hit the Fenwick pool at 10 a.m. Saturday.
