Roosevelt Road will soon be a friendlier place. On May 1, Oak Park resident Rob Pierce is opening the Friendly School of Folk Music above his Friendly Tap on the Berwyn side of Roosevelt. Pierce had been contemplating converting the apartment above the bar into a music school for some time so when the tenants who lived there moved out late last year, he decided to turn that dream into reality. He converted the space into three music rooms where 16 teachers will offer group and private lessons in a wide range of musical instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, banjo, … ]]> Mon, 30 Apr 2012 19:53:34 -0500 http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12112062-417/folk-musicians-harmonize-in-new-school.html http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12112062-417/folk-musicians-harmonize-in-new-school.html <![CDATA[ Property Transfers ]]>

The unofficial start of summer means one thing: barbecue ribs. And no one can cook them like Robinson’s No. 1 Ribs in Oak Park. Barbecue-rib king Charlie Robinson has come a long, long way since he was born the third of seven children to a Mississippi sharecropper in 1946, and he’s done it the old-fashioned way. In the latest example of Disney/Marvel corporate synergy, the heavily promoted X-Men story beginning in this week’s “Astonishing X-Men #50” was revealed May 22 on the morning ABC talk show “The View.” The general consensus is that Astonishing X-Men #50 will lead to the marriage of openly gay superhero Northstar and his boyfriend, Kyle, in June’s issue #51, which features an X-Men wedding — seemingly a good fit for the “hot topics” typically discussed on “The View.” “Astonishing X-Men #50,” by writer Marjorie Liu and artist Mike Perkins, is out this week, with stores that get Tuesday, May 22, shipments … ]]> Thu, 24 May 2012 05:10:10 -0500 http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12555821-420/business-briefs-wedding-day-for-gay-x-men.html http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12555821-420/business-briefs-wedding-day-for-gay-x-men.html <![CDATA[ Providing loving family care ]]>

Even a development that benefits everyone sometimes contains the seeds of a problem. “People are living longer,’’ Geraldine DeCleene Hanrahan said. “There are lots of reasons: People have quit smoking, our medicines are better, our water is safer.’’ But longevity sometimes creates the issue of caring for elderly people who have difficulty caring for themselves. “The baby boomers are very busy, they’re working,’’ Hanrahan said. “They often are not at home to provide care for their elderly parents.’’ Providing that care — the nonmedical part of that care — is what Hanrahan’s business is about. She is owner of Loving … ]]> Fri, 18 May 2012 17:24:48 -0500 http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12449575-420/providing-loving-family-care.html http://riverforest.suntimes.com/business/12449575-420/providing-loving-family-care.html <![CDATA[ Business Briefs ]]>
