River Forest Police Blotter, May 16-23

Updated: August 1, 2011 12:20AM

The following incidents were listed among the official reports of River Forest Police Department. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination.

FOWL BEHAVIOR

At 1:50 p.m. May 24, a chicken was observed — we are not making this up — repeatedly crossing the road between River Forest and Elmwood Park, also known as North Avenue. The bird, which caused a considerable traffic jam by its behavior, was eventually captured and turned over to the Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital in Elmwood Park.

Police declined to speculate on a motive for the fowl’s actions, though they did acknowledge it was successful in its numerous attempts to get to the other side.

THEFT

Police were called to the Walgreen’s, 7251 Lake St., at 6:30 p.m. May 24, after a man walked out with $475.84 worth of allergy medicine without paying for it. The suspect got into a car and took off. When Oak Park police attempted to curb the car on North Boulevard, the driver took off. The vehicle was finally stopped on the 200 block of N. Linden in Oak Park. Archie D. Strong, Jr., 37, of 657 N. Central, Chicago, was arrested and charged with felony theft. He was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bond Thursday. The driver of the car, Willie S. Williams, 31, of 653 N. Central, Chicago was charged driving on a suspended license and no insurance.

A woman’s purse containing $1,080 in unspecified contents was stolen from a locker room in the River Forest Tennis Club, 615 Lathrop Ave., between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. May 21.

The steering column of a car on the 7700 block of Central Avenue was forcibly removed around 9 p.m. May 21 in an attempted vehicle theft.

A wrought iron bench was stolen from the front of a property on the 7300 block of North Avenue between 9 a.m. May 22 and 1 p.m. May 23.

ALCOHOL

Noah Schaeffer, 19, of 218 S. Wesley, Oak Park, was reportedly intoxicated and verbally abusive when stopped on his bicycle on the 300 block of Lathrop Avenue at 12:12 a.m. May 25. He was asked for ID but refused and allegedly became belligerent. He was arrested and brought to the station, was written a local ordinance ticket for under-aged drinking and released to his parents.

BURGLARY

A woman’s purse and wallet was stolen from an unlocked car on a driveway on the 800 block of Keystone Avenue between 12:01 a.m. and 7 a.m. May 11. A suspect arrested in an Elmwood Park burglary reportedly was found in possession of a check from that wallet. “When this person was arrested by Elmwood Park police, this person’s property was recovered from her,” said Sgt. Mike Thornley.

TRAFFIC

Hjalmar Vasquez, 34, of 2528 N. Monitor, Chicago, as stopped on the 1100 block of N. Harlem Avenue at 2:15 a.m. May 25, for having an expired temporary registration. He was arrested and charged with having no valid license and no insurance
