911 call leads to copper theft arrest

A Chicago man was arrested on February 5 and charged with the theft of copper downspout.
Police say they were called to a home on the 800 block of Bonnie Brae at 10:15 a.m. on a call of a subject removing copper downspouts. The homeowner provided police with a detailed description of both the offender and his car. Officers already on extra patrols in the area due to similar incidents immediately spotted the vehicle and stopped it at Chicago and Harlem avenues, said Deputy Chief James O’Shea.
He said several “large sections of copper downspouts” were in the car, including a nine-foot section belonging to the victim who called police.
Stanley Mark Rozkocha, 36, of the 7400 block of West Belmont Avenue, Chicago, was arrested and taken to the station. There, O’Shea said, he provided voluntary statements implicating himself in five separate thefts of copper downspout on the 800 block of Bonnie Brae between Jan. 20 and Feb. 5.
Rozkocha was been charged with one count of theft and has a March 1 court date at the Maybrook Courthouse. O’Shea said additional charges may be added. River Forest detectives believe Rozkocha’s arrest may assist other agencies with similar ongoing investigations.
O’Shea said the resident’s alertness was key.
