Tax counseling for
elderly from RSVP

The RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) of West Suburban Cook and Southern DuPage counties will offer Internal Revenue Service’s Tax Counseling for the Elderly program now through April 13.

The free program will provide assistance to individuals age 60 and older from low- to moderate-income households in completing their federal tax forms, including 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040, as well as state income tax forms. All forms will be electronically submitted.

Volunteer tax assistors have been specially trained to provide this service that will be available at various locations for easy accessibility, including:

Mondays at the Melrose Park Public Library, 801 N. Broadway (19th Avenue);

Tuesdays at Elmwood Park’s LaFrambois Senior Center, at Village Hall, 11 Conti Parkway;

Wednesdays at the Proviso Township Office, 4565 W. Harrison St. in Hillside;

Thursdays at the Leyden Township’s Carl Fiorito Center, 2601 N. Mannheim Road, in Franklin Park;

Fridays at the Norridge Senior Assistance Center, 7774 W. Irving Park Road; and

Saturdays at the Robert M. Collins Center, on Triton’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., in River Grove.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the RSVP Office at (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3895. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Upon making an appointment, individuals will be asked to bring their W-2 forms from all employers, Form 1099-S, bank interest statements, a copy of last year’s tax return and any other relevant tax information.

Lunch Program: Served 11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, for suggested contribution $1.50/meal. All residents 60 and older are welcome and encouraged to attend. Transportation available, call (708) 383-4806. Get Coupons for Dine Out: Program between 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the lunch room. Offers seniors the opportunity to enjoy affordable, nutritious lunches or dinners at specified local restaurants. Suggested donation $3.50.

AARP Tax-Aide program: Free basic tax preparation assistance is available for persons with low and middle income with special attention to those age 60 and older. Appointments can now be made to see a tax counselor at 9:30, 10:30 or 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday through April 12. Individuals will need to bring last year’s federal and state tax returns, all 2011 tax documents and identification for themselves and dependents. To schedule an appointment call (708) 383-8060.

of Oak Park

Senior Dancing Hour: Call for time. Feb. 20 at Longfellow Center, 610 S. Ridgeland Ave., at Jackson Boulevard. Dance the afternoon away every third Monday of the month. DJ James Rohrbacher will play all of your old favorites. Bring a partner, come with a friend or come solo and meet some new people.

Book Worms Book Club: 10:30-noon, Feb. 23 at Cheney Mansion. A lively discussion each month. February’s book selection is Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Copies of the book are reserved for the Book Worms Book Club at the main Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St., under “Park District of Oak Park Book Worms.” Fee: $1 for Active Adult members; $2 for nonmembers.

Current Events: Discussion Group meets 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month; Brain Builders meets on the second Thursday of each month; and Drop-In Games meets every Tuesday (Scrabble, Bridge, Mah Jongg and Chess). Classes include “Winter Warmer Crafts,” “Memory Keepers” and “Keepsake Crafts.” Programs meet at Longfellow Center, 610 S. Ridgeland Ave., (at Jackson Boulevard) in Oak Park.

Card Club: Bridge, 12:30-3:30 p.m. March 1 and March 15 (first and third Thursday). Refreshments served. All levels welcome, but, must have basic knowledge of game. Call (708) 771-6159, Ext. 277 if you plan to attend so there will be enough refreshments.

Trip to the Art Institute: RSVP by March 1. Trip is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 7. Fee: $50/$60 includes one of the audio tours. After exploring the museum enjoy lunch in the Garden Cafe, also included in fee.

AARP 55 Alive Driving Class: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. March 13-14 at the Community Center. Eight-hour classroom refresher course. Upon completion of the course you will receive a completion certificate which may entitle you to a discount on your insurance. Fee: $12 for AARP members/$14 for nonmembers. The student certificates require that the AARP Membership Number be filled in to qualify for the $12 fee.

St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. March 16 at the Community Center. RSVP by March 14. Corned beef and cabbage. After lunch play some Bingo.

Trip to White Fence Farm: 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. March 30 for its famous fried chicken with all the fixins’. RSVP by March 21. See the Legacy Sisters present America’s Wartime Sweethearts: The Andrews Sisters.
