Wrestling: OPRF comes roaring back for Class 3A crown

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Oak Park-River Forest was ranked No. 2 in the country, coming off a dominant performance at last weekend’s individual state tournament. What could coach Mike Powell be worried about?

Plenty, as it turned out.

Starting 113-pounder Alex Madrigal was out with an ankle injury suffered in his final match at individual state. Savonne Bennette, the regular 132-pounder, tore his MCL on Wednesday. Heavyweight Adam Lemke-Bell had a 102-degree fever for six days in a row that broke on Thursday.

And the Huskies had a gutsy opponent in Marist to face in Saturday’s Class 3A championship match at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

How gutsy?

Enough to wipe out a 15-point deficit and pull into a tie with two bouts left.
