OAK PARK — A man stopped for questioning by Oak Park police Monday afternoon in connection with a theft investigation slashed his own neck with a broken bottle, police said.

The unidentified male was rushed by ambulance to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, with what police called “significant but non-life threatening injuries.”

Oak Park police Cmdr. Ladon Reynolds said an officer responded to a retail theft call at the Jewel Store, 7036 Roosevelt Road, and spotted the suspect running on the 1100 block of Home Avenue.

Reynolds said the man threw what appeared to be the items stolen from the store, and ran into an alley between the 1100 blocks of South Wenonah Avenue and South Home Avenue.

The suspect attempted to hide in a garbage can, Reynolds said, but when confronted by police the man repeatedly refused to drop the broken bottle he was holding, then slashed his own neck.

Reynolds said the man, who was rushed to the hospital before police knew his identity, is considered “a person of interest” in the theft investigation.
